Grapefruit Juice to Lose Weight

Grapefruits contain an antioxidant which evens out insulin levels. This is a way of warding off the infamous hunger pains while allowing the body to burn fat more easily. You can just cut a grapefruit in half, and enjoy it with a spoon for a quick snack, or indulge in a glass or two of juice a day.

Drinking grapefruit juice will help you get the recommended amount of vitamin C and potassium in your diet. It may also help with weight loss if you drink the right amount of juice at the right time.

When to Drink
Drinking grapefruit juice along with your meal isn't likely to help with weight loss. The theory behind grapefruit juice and weight loss is that drinking it before your meal, as what is called a preload, will fill you up enough so you eat fewer calories during your meal. These saved calories can add up to a small amount of weight loss.

Drink Unsweetened Varieties

When trying to lose weight, you want to stick with unsweetened varieties of grapefruit juice. While sweetened grapefruit juice may taste good, it's higher in calories. A cup of unsweetened white grapefruit juice has 94 calories, but sweetened white grapefruit juice has 115 calories per cup. That's an extra 63 calories per day if you drink an 8-ounce glass of grapefruit juice before each meal.

Research Results
People who drank 7 ounces of grapefruit juice before each meal for 12 weeks lost about 3.3 pounds in a study published in the "Journal of Medicinal Food" in 2006, compared to a loss of just 0.6 pound in the control group. Another study, published in "Nutrition & Metabolism" in February 2011, found that drinking 4.5 ounces of grapefruit juice before each meal combined with following a reduced-calorie diet led to a 7.1 percent weight loss over 12 weeks.
People who drank the same amount of water, however, experienced about the same amount of weight loss as those who drank the grapefruit juice. The grapefruit juice group did lead to more beneficial effects on participants' cholesterol levels than the group that drank water. According to the study's authors, consuming a low-energy-density preload is what is important for weight loss -- not necessarily the type of preload.

A study of 100 men and women by the Scripps Clinic in San Diego, California, found that participants who drank grapefruit juice three times a day lost an average of 3.3 pounds. Some participants lost more than 10 pounds.
Insulin

Researchers believe the positive weight-loss effects of grapefruit juice happen because it lowers insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the absorption of glucose, or sugar, in the body; excess insulin in the body can cause weight gain. If you have high insulin levels and are already following a diet and exercise plan, adding grapefruit juice can help.
